Mon Jan 13 04:52:23 UTC 2025: ## Modi Inaugurates Strategically Vital Z-Morh Tunnel in Kashmir
**Srinagar, January 13, 2025** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the strategically important Z-Morh tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. The 6.5km, ₹2,400 crore tunnel connects Gagangir and Sonamarg, significantly improving year-round access to Ladakh. This “engineering marvel,” as described by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), will greatly enhance connectivity for both civilian and military traffic.
The tunnel, situated at an altitude of 8,650 feet, features a two-lane roadway and a parallel escape passage. It bypasses previously treacherous landslide and avalanche-prone routes, reducing travel time between Srinagar and Sonamarg from the previous 30 kilometers per hour to 70 kilometers per hour, with a capacity to handle 1000 vehicles per hour.
The project, initially slated for completion in 2016-2017, faced delays due to financial issues with the original contractor. Work recommenced in 2020, finally concluding last year. The tunnel’s completion is expected to boost tourism in Sonamarg, transforming it into a year-round destination and potentially establishing it as a major ski resort alongside Gulmarg. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted the potential for significant economic growth in the region. The Z-Morh tunnel, alongside the under-construction Zojila tunnel, will ensure uninterrupted connectivity to Baltal and Ladakh.
