**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, January 12, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government has announced a ₹471.89 crore project to expand the underground drainage (UGD) system in Madurai. The project, funded under the Amrut 2.0 scheme, will benefit 100 wards, including those added to the city limits in 2011.
Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru laid the foundation stone on Sunday. He stated that the project will address the lack of UGD infrastructure in many peripheral areas. The initial phase, costing ₹307.78 crore, already provided UGD connections to 22 wards, benefiting 14,905 houses.
This second phase will focus on the remaining wards, particularly those in the north and south banks of the Vaigai River. The north bank project, costing ₹179.09 crore, will cover 16 wards, laying 215 km of pipes and providing connections to 25,555 houses. The south bank project, with a budget of ₹292.80 crore, will serve 15 wards, installing 285 km of pipes and connecting 53,672 houses.
The expansion is expected to significantly improve sanitation and infrastructure in Madurai’s expanding urban areas. Several ministers and officials attended the foundation stone laying ceremony.
