**Chennai, January 13, 2025** – Illegal parking and sewage discharge are causing significant problems along the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road, a vital link connecting Rajiv Gandhi Salai (the IT Corridor) and GST Road. The issue, highlighted in *The Hindu*, is severely impacting traffic flow and the environment.
Numerous companies situated along the road contribute to the parking problem, with vehicles often obstructing the roadways and service lanes, negating recent road-widening efforts by the Highways Department. The situation is exacerbated by buses from nearby schools and colleges, creating major bottlenecks during peak hours.
While Tambaram Traffic Police state that patrol vehicles are removing illegally parked vehicles and impounding offenders, a more comprehensive solution is needed.
Adding to the woes, untreated sewage is flowing into the Chitlapakkam lake via the storm water drain network. This pollution threatens the recently renovated lake, which boasts a new compound wall, children’s play area, and pedestrian pathway, all funded by significant Water Resources Department investment. The sewage discharge not only damages the lake but also poses a serious threat to groundwater in the area. Civic officials are yet to address this environmental concern.
