Mon Jan 13 10:37:47 UTC 2025: ## Maha Kumbh 2025 Begins Amidst Tight Security and Record Crowds
**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India** – The Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering, commenced on January 13th, 2025, at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, drawing an estimated 60 lakh (6 million) devotees by 9:30 am on the auspicious occasion of Paush Purnima. Authorities anticipate over 4 crore (40 million) pilgrims over the first two days and a total of 400 million throughout the 45-day event.
Millions of devotees, including hundreds of young people from across India and abroad, took the holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. The event is characterized by a blend of faith, tradition, and technology, catering to a diverse range of participants.
Security is a top priority, with over 10,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed, supported by NSG commandos and river patrols. Pontoon bridges and a comprehensive traffic management plan are in place to control the massive crowds. Social media monitoring is also underway to prevent any potential disruptions.
The event has also sparked some controversy. Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad president Mahant Ravindra Puri demanded the return of ancient temples allegedly converted into mosques, although he stated that Muslims are welcome to attend the Kumbh.
Indian Railways has implemented a significant transportation plan, including seven special trains from Odisha and over 13,000 total train services to facilitate the movement of devotees. Alliance Air also launched a new Dehradun-Prayagraj flight service.
Foreign visitors expressed their awe and respect for the event, describing their experience as “extraordinary” and praising the vibrant atmosphere. Uttar Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya assured everyone of a warm welcome.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the Maha Kumbh as an opportunity to understand the spiritual and cultural heritage of Uttar Pradesh and India. He urged devotees to participate and also conserve the environment, echoing Prime Minister Modi’s call for tree planting. The event is expected to continue until February 26th, 2025.
