Mon Jan 13 06:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Maha Kumbh Kalpwas 2025 Begins: Devotees Embark on Month-Long Spiritual Journey

**Prayagraj, India –** The Maha Kumbh Kalpwas 2025 commenced on Monday, January 13th, with thousands of devotees taking a holy dip in the Ganges River on Paush Purnima. This marks the beginning of a rigorous month-long spiritual retreat on the Sangam’s sands, concluding on February 12th, with the Maaghi Purnima bath.

Devotees, after their auspicious bath, will take a vow of Kalpwas, guided by priests. Their observance will include planting barley – believed to enhance prosperity mirroring the plant’s growth – and the daily worship of a Shaliigram deity installed in their temporary camps. Self-prepared meals and rigorous adherence to strict principles are central to the practice.

These principles, according to Swami Harichitnya Brahmachari of Tikermafi Ashram, Jhūnsī, are designed to cleanse devotees of sins accumulated in daily life. The Kalpwas, considered equivalent to donating millions of cows, entails strict adherence to principles of truth, non-violence, self-control, compassion, celibacy, abstinence from intoxicants, early rising, thrice-daily holy baths, daily prayers, ancestral rites, and charity. Celibacy, fasting, worship, spiritual gatherings and charity are particularly emphasized.

Scientists have also noted the mental energy benefits associated with the rigorous practice. However, enduring the Sangam’s harsh winter conditions while upholding the Kalpwas’ strict rules is considered extremely challenging.
