Mon Jan 13 17:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Strong Earthquake Strikes Southwestern Japan, Tsunami Advisory Issued
**Tokyo, January 13, 2025** – A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 struck southwestern Japan on Monday evening, prompting tsunami advisories for several coastal areas. The quake, centered at a depth of 30 kilometers in Miyazaki Prefecture on the Kyushu island, hit at 9:19 p.m. local time.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency warned residents to stay away from coastal regions due to the tsunami threat. While initial reports indicated no immediate damage, a precautionary evacuation was ordered for coastal areas of Kochi Prefecture. Public broadcaster NHK reported that a tsunami, estimated at up to one meter high, reached land within 30 minutes of the quake. Water levels at Miyazaki Port were measured at 20 centimeters.
NHK footage showed that power remained on in affected areas, and no issues were reported at local nuclear power plants. The earthquake, a result of Japan’s location on the “Ring of Fire,” a zone of high seismic activity, shook a wide area of Kyushu. The situation remains under close monitoring.
