Mon Jan 13 10:37:24 UTC 2025: ## Lebanon’s President Begins Consultations to Name New Prime Minister Amidst Crisis

BEIRUT – Lebanon’s newly elected President, Joseph Aoun, initiated binding consultations on Monday to appoint a new prime minister, a crucial step in addressing the nation’s multifaceted crises. The consultations, which began with a meeting with the deputy parliament speaker, are expected to conclude today.

Two leading candidates have emerged: caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, backed by the Hezbollah-led alliance, and Nawaf Salam, a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and a favorite among anti-Hezbollah lawmakers. President Aoun has expressed hope for a prime minister who will be a partner in reform and enjoys international support.

Lebanon has been grappling with a devastating economic crisis exacerbated by a recent war between Hezbollah and Israel. The country operated under a caretaker government since October 2022, following the previous president’s departure. The new prime minister will face the immense challenge of implementing reforms demanded by international donors, rebuilding war-torn areas, and navigating the complexities of the Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire agreement, including the sensitive issue of Hezbollah’s disarmament.

Mikati, one of Lebanon’s wealthiest individuals, has served as caretaker prime minister throughout the presidential vacancy. While expressing willingness to continue, his opponents view him as representative of a failing political system. Salam, on the other hand, represents a potential shift towards reform and enjoys greater international backing.

Lebanon’s unique power-sharing system, designed to balance the influence of different religious communities, dictates that the prime minister must be a Sunni Muslim. The outcome of these consultations will significantly impact Lebanon’s future, determining the path towards economic recovery and stability in the wake of prolonged conflict and crisis.
