Mon Jan 13 15:28:29 UTC 2025: ## Kerala Explores Nuclear Power to Boost Renewable Energy
**Thiruvananthapuram, January 14, 2025** – A new discussion paper from the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) proposes exploring small modular nuclear reactors as part of a broader strategy to enhance the state’s renewable energy capacity. The paper, released Monday, aims to guide the formulation of new regulations for renewable energy from 2025-26.
The KSERC suggests diversifying Kerala’s energy portfolio to include small modular nuclear power plants (SMNPs), battery energy storage systems (BESS), green ammonia projects, pumped storage projects, municipal waste-to-energy (WTE) plants, and offshore wind energy. The paper highlights the role of nuclear energy in ensuring long-term energy security, particularly as coal plants are phased out. This recommendation comes amidst ongoing public debate surrounding the pros and cons of nuclear power in Kerala.
The document also emphasizes optimizing hydroelectric power projects, suggesting cost reductions of 20-30% through improved design and safety margins. It encourages the development of WTE plants by urban local bodies through public-private partnerships, and proposes utilizing BESS units to manage fluctuations in renewable energy generation. The existing KSERC regulations on renewable energy and net metering, last amended in 2024, are set to expire this year.
