Mon Jan 13 16:00:48 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Farmers Protest Wild Boar Culling Restrictions

**Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu – January 14, 2025** – Farmers in Coimbatore district are protesting a new Tamil Nadu government order on wild boar culling, arguing that the restrictions fail to address the widespread crop damage they are experiencing. The order permits culling only in areas more than three kilometers from forest boundaries (Zone C), while prohibiting it within one kilometer (Zone A) and recommending capture and release in the intervening zone (Zone B).

However, many affected villages lie within the three-kilometer radius, leaving farmers with little recourse against the significant losses inflicted by wild boars. These losses encompass a variety of crops, including vegetables, groundnuts, maize, sugarcane, and bananas.

G. Ranganathan, a state executive committee member of Thamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, highlighted that the majority of affected farmlands fall within the restricted three-kilometer zone. He urged the government to either revise the order to allow for the capture and relocation of boars within this radius or implement more effective measures. He also noted the additional problem of laborers refusing to work in fields due to fear of boar attacks.

P. Kandasamy, General Secretary of Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam, criticized the order as ineffective and reiterated the organization’s long-standing demand to have wild boars declared as vermin by the central government, similar to what Uttarakhand has done. He believes this is the only viable solution to control the burgeoning wild boar population. The farmers are demanding immediate action to mitigate the significant economic losses and safety concerns caused by the growing wild boar menace.
