Sun Jan 12 20:12:23 UTC 2025: ## Andhra Pradesh to Build New Capital Amaravati in Three Years
**Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh – January 13, 2025** – Five years after the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government abandoned the project, Andhra Pradesh is set to build a new capital city, Amaravati. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government, in a recent Supreme Court filing, committed to completing the project within three years, a significantly shorter timeframe than the six months initially mandated by the High Court in 2022.
The ambitious project, estimated at ₹50,000 crore (approximately $6 billion USD), includes the construction of a new Legislative Assembly and High Court. The TDP government has already approved administrative sanction for ₹11,468 crore worth of engineering works and begun the tendering process for various construction projects.
Funding for the project will come from various sources. The central government has pledged ₹15,000 crore in aid, secured through the World Bank and other multilateral institutions, with the World Bank already giving in-principle approval for a loan. An additional ₹11,000 crore loan has been secured from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited.
The master plan, originally designed by Foster + Partners, remains largely unchanged. Highlights of the project include a 103-acre Assembly building featuring a 250-meter tall structure, and five administrative towers, three of which will have at least 39 floors. The project also encompasses the establishment of various central government departments and educational institutions. Furthermore, a new 57 km railway line connecting Amaravati to the existing rail network will boost development.
While the government is confident of meeting the three-year deadline, challenges remain, including the sheer scale of the project and the need to efficiently manage funds. The TDP-Jana Sena-BJP alliance’s strong majority in the Assembly provides a political advantage, contrasting sharply with the YSRCP’s previous abandonment of the project, a decision which ultimately contributed to their electoral defeat. The successful completion of the project hinges on the government’s ability to secure and utilize funds effectively and meet its ambitious timeline.
