Sun Jan 12 13:16:09 UTC 2025: ## Bangladesh Expresses “Deep Concern” Over India’s Border Fencing
**DHAKA, BANGLADESH –** The interim government of Bangladesh has voiced strong concerns over India’s recent border fencing activities, claiming that the construction was undertaken without prior consultation. Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin conveyed this message to Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma during an urgent meeting on Sunday, January 12, 2025.
Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Adviser, Jehangir Alam Chowdhury, earlier reported that India has erected fences at five locations along the shared border. He described existing border agreements between the two countries as “unequal” and blamed them for current issues. The Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) described the fencing as “unauthorised” and stated that it undermines the spirit of cooperation between the nations. The MoFA also strongly condemned the recent killing of a Bangladeshi citizen by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in Sunamganj, demanding an investigation and action against those responsible.
While Mr. Verma acknowledged ongoing communication between the BSF and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) regarding border fencing, the Bangladeshi government’s statement highlights the escalating tensions. The issue has gained prominence since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024, with increased border crossings and incidents involving members of the Awami League. The death of Awami League leader Ishfaq Ali Khan Panna near the border in August further fueled tensions.
The upcoming DG-level talks between the BGB and BSF are expected to address the border disputes, including the unauthorized fencing and the recurring incidents of violence. The situation underscores the need for immediate dialogue and cooperative solutions to maintain peaceful relations between India and Bangladesh.
