**Kanniyakumari, Tamil Nadu, January 13, 2025** – Fifteen Indian fishermen have been detained near Diego Garcia island in the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) for allegedly crossing the maritime boundary and poaching. The fishermen, who embarked on a deep-sea fishing trip from Thengapattinam harbour in Kanniyakumari district on December 29th, 2024, were apprehended on January 9th.
Eight of the detained fishermen are from Thoothoor in Kanniyakumari, while the others hail from different parts of India. Their families, alerted to the detention, are reportedly in shock and have contacted the district administration for assistance. The fishermen were aboard a mechanized boat owned by J. Paul Surgen of Thoothoor. The incident has caused distress within the fishing community.
