**Kathmandu, Nepal –** Charles Sobhraj, the infamous serial killer known as “The Serpent” and “The Bikini Killer,” has been released from a Nepalese prison after nearly two decades behind bars. The 78-year-old, who committed a string of murders across Asia in the 1970s, was freed in 2022 due to health concerns, returning to his native France.

Sobhraj’s decades-long criminal career targeted primarily Western backpackers, often using drugs and manipulation to commit his crimes. His audacious escape from Tihar Jail in India in 1986, following a 12-year sentence, made international headlines. He was recaptured in Goa after a manhunt led by Inspector Madhukar Zende.

His subsequent arrest in Nepal in 2003 for the 1975 murders of American Connie Jo Bronzich and Canadian Laurent Carrière resulted in a life sentence. While imprisoned in Nepal, he married a local woman, Nihita Biswas.

Sobhraj’s life story, marked by cunning, charm, and a trail of victims, has captivated audiences worldwide. His exploits have been chronicled in books, films, and the popular Netflix miniseries, “The Serpent.” Despite his release, the full extent of his crimes and their impact on countless lives remain a chilling testament to his criminal legacy.
