Sun Jan 12 15:52:55 UTC 2025: ## Former Cricketer Devajit Saikia Appointed BCCI Secretary
**Mumbai, India** – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Devajit Saikia as its new secretary. Saikia, a former first-class cricketer, succeeds Jay Shah, who recently became the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The appointment was confirmed at a Special General Meeting (SGM) on Sunday, well within the 45-day timeframe stipulated by the BCCI constitution.
Prabhtej Singh Bhatia was simultaneously elected as the BCCI treasurer, replacing Ashish Shelar. Both Saikia and Bhatia were the sole candidates for their respective positions.
Saikia, a lawyer by profession, entered cricket administration in 2016, citing a desire to combat corruption within Assam’s cricket governing body. Despite his relatively brief playing career (four first-class matches between 1990 and 1991), he brings a legal background and administrative experience to the role.
Before officially assuming his duties, Saikia and BCCI president Roger Binny met with India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma for an extensive discussion on the team’s recent performance in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. While the meeting addressed areas for improvement, a BCCI source indicated that immediate changes are unlikely given the upcoming Champions Trophy in 2025. The IPL is scheduled to commence on March 23rd.
