**Kolkata, India** – A new examination of Swami Vivekananda’s early life reveals details of his education and the pivotal moment that shifted his focus from academics to spirituality. Newly surfaced biographical information details his schooling at the Metropolitan Institution in Kolkata under Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar from 1871 to 1877.

Following this, Vivekananda (then Narendra Nath Datta) moved with his family to Raipur, present-day Chhattisgarh, where his formal education ceased for approximately a year and a half. While in Raipur, he engaged in intellectual discussions with learned individuals, including the father of renowned linguist and historian Harinath De.

In 1879, the family returned to Kolkata, and Narendra Nath Datta re-enrolled at the Metropolitan Institution, eventually graduating high school with first-class honors. He subsequently enrolled at Presidency College, Kolkata, before transferring to Scottish Church College, where he earned his F.A. in Philosophy in 1881 and his B.A. in 1885.

However, his academic achievements are overshadowed by his spiritual journey. His transformative encounter with his guru, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, in 1881 at the home of Surendra Nath Mitra, marked a turning point in his life. Impressed by Narendra Nath Datta’s singing, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa invited him to Dakshineswar Kali Temple, initiating his path toward becoming Swami Vivekananda. While his formal education laid a foundation, it was his spiritual awakening that ultimately defined his legacy.
