Sat Jan 11 16:27:17 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Shores Witness Rise in Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Deaths
**Chennai, January 12, 2025** – Concerns are rising for the Olive Ridley sea turtle population after nine dead turtles were discovered on Chennai’s Injambakkam beach on Saturday. The discovery follows reports of over 100 turtle carcasses washing ashore along the Chennai coastline since December, a significantly higher number than typically seen during the entire nesting season (December-April). The low number of nests spotted this season further fuels conservationists’ anxieties.
A resident alerted the Forest Department, prompting an immediate investigation. Chennai Wildlife Warden Manish Meena stated that a post-mortem will be considered after assessing the carcasses. While the exact cause of death remains undetermined, the high mortality rate is prompting increased conservation efforts.
Mr. Meena highlighted recent initiatives, including an awareness program held on January 9th with the Fisheries Department to educate Ennore fishermen on rescuing turtles entangled in fishing nets. A state-level sea turtle conservation workshop, involving Fisheries Department officials and the Indian Coast Guard, was also conducted on January 8th. The Olive Ridley turtle, classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, is a crucial part of the Chennai coastline ecosystem, making its conservation paramount. The investigation into the recent deaths is ongoing.
