Sun Jan 12 09:13:24 UTC 2025: ## Devjit Saikia Appointed as New BCCI Secretary

**Mumbai, India** – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Devjit Saikia as its new secretary. Saikia, a former Assam cricketer, succeeds Jay Shah, who recently assumed the role of International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman. The position had been vacant for over a month.

Saikia’s first assignment was attending a BCCI meeting alongside President Roger Binny to discuss India’s performance in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Sources told India Today that Captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir were also present at the meeting.

Saikia boasts a diverse background encompassing cricket, law, and administration. A former first-class cricketer, he played four matches as a wicket-keeper between 1990 and 1991, scoring 53 runs and claiming 9 dismissals.

After his relatively short cricket career, Saikia transitioned to law, starting his practice at the Gauhati High Court at the age of 28. Prior to his legal career, he also secured positions with the Northern Frontier Railway and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through sports quotas.

His foray into cricket administration began in 2016 when he became one of six vice-presidents of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He later served as ACA secretary from 2019 until his appointment as BCCI joint secretary in 2022. His extensive experience in both cricket and administration makes him a well-suited candidate for the role.
