**Islamabad, Pakistan –** Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai delivered a powerful condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza and the Afghan Taliban’s suppression of women’s education at a global summit on girls’ education in Muslim nations held in Islamabad on Sunday.
Yousafzai, speaking at the summit hosted by Pakistan, highlighted the devastating impact of the conflict in Gaza on the education system. She stated that Israel’s actions have decimated the education system, bombing universities and destroying over 90% of schools. She vowed to continue speaking out against what she called Israel’s violations of international law and human rights.
The summit, attended by representatives from dozens of countries, also served as a platform for Yousafzai to denounce the Afghan Taliban’s treatment of women. She urged Muslim leaders to not legitimize the Taliban government and to actively oppose their restrictions on girls’ education, calling their actions a violation of basic human rights. The Taliban government notably did not send delegates to the two-day event.
Yousafzai’s address comes amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel’s retaliatory offensive has resulted in the deaths of over 46,000 people, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The conflict began after a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, that resulted in over 1,200 deaths in Israel.
The activist, who survived an assassination attempt by the Pakistani Taliban for her advocacy of female education, continues to be a vocal advocate for girls’ rights globally. Her impassioned speech at the Islamabad summit underscores the urgent need for international action to address the ongoing crises in Gaza and Afghanistan, where the denial of education remains a significant obstacle to women’s empowerment.
