OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – LSU gymnast Konnor McClain, the 2022 U.S. national all-around champion, is back in action after a challenging year. McClain, who suffered an Achilles tendon tear in May 2024, dashing her Olympic dreams, returned to competition in LSU’s season opener against Iowa State on January 3rd, 2025. She scored a 9.825 on the balance beam and a 9.80 on the uneven bars, demonstrating a remarkable recovery.
McClain’s journey back to the sport has been marked by significant personal loss – she lost both her father and grandmother to COVID-19 in 2021. This latest setback prompted a change in perspective. “After my Achilles I sat in my room and said, ‘Let me change my attitude,’” McClain said. “I wanted to come back and be there for the team, and the team has my back now.”
LSU coach Jay Clark expressed his admiration for McClain’s resilience, stating, “I knew everything she’d been through… it wasn’t fun to see that happen again.” He initially doubted her ability to recover in time for the season, but McClain proved him wrong.
McClain will compete in the prestigious Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad in Oklahoma City on Saturday, January 4th, alongside fellow LSU gymnasts and top teams including Oklahoma, Utah, and California. This competition marks another significant step in her comeback, with hopes of eventually returning to all-around competition. The meet will be televised on ABC.
