Sun Jan 12 08:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Michigan Communities Awarded $100,000 to Expand Tree Coverage
**Northern Michigan, MI** – Michigan, already boasting 20 billion trees covering 53% of its land, is further expanding its arboreal assets. The DTE Energy Foundation, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and ReLeaf Michigan, has announced over $100,000 in grants to 28 communities across the state. This initiative, part of a larger project ongoing since 1996, aims to enhance Michigan’s environment and quality of life.
The competitive grant program, overseen by the DNR, awards funding based on submitted applications that meet specific criteria, ensuring the selected projects are environmentally sound and won’t interfere with public utilities. Kelly Gray, DNR Urban & Community Forestry Grant Specialist, emphasized the importance of sustainability, ensuring planted trees will thrive for years to come.
“Many communities lack adequate tree canopy,” Gray stated, highlighting the numerous benefits trees provide, including improved air and water quality, temperature moderation, energy savings through shade, and wildlife habitat. These benefits, often underestimated, are crucial to community well-being.
This year’s recipients include Reed City, Grayling, Ludington, and Elk Rapids, each receiving the maximum grant of $4,000 to support their tree-planting projects. The initiative underscores Michigan’s commitment to maintaining its lush landscape and harnessing the numerous environmental and economic benefits of a robust tree population.
