**London, England** – The FA Cup has undergone a significant restructuring, eliminating replays from the first round onwards as part of a new six-year deal with the Premier League. While the agreement increases funding for grassroots football by up to £33 million annually, the changes have sparked controversy.
EFL and non-league clubs criticized a lack of consultation, claiming the decision prioritizes Premier League interests. The elimination of replays, previously removed from the fifth round, means matches will now be decided on the day with extra time and penalties if necessary.
Although the FA touted weekend scheduling as a benefit for fans, this year’s third round began on Thursday and concluded on Monday. While several matches went to extra time or penalties, the most notable impact was seen when National League side Tamworth held Premier League Tottenham to a goalless draw, forcing the continuation into extra time instead of a lucrative replay.
The new format grants the FA Cup exclusive weekends in the fourth, fifth, and quarter-final rounds, a first for the competition. The final will also be held on a weekend without Premier League fixtures.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham defended the changes, emphasizing the Cup’s importance as a revenue generator for investing in the game. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters echoed the sentiment, highlighting the commitment to enhancing the FA Cup schedule. However, the changes continue to be debated among fans and clubs alike.
