Sun Jan 12 16:17:47 UTC 2025: ## Zverev Cruises into Australian Open Second Round, Chasing Grand Slam Glory

**Melbourne, Australia** – Alexander Zverev kicked off his Australian Open campaign with a decisive 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over French wildcard Lucas Pouille, advancing to the second round for the ninth consecutive year. The German, who recently recovered from a bicep strain, displayed a strong performance, hitting 37 winners and saving both break points he faced in a match lasting two hours and 20 minutes.

Zverev, aiming for his first Grand Slam title and to become the first German man to win a major since Boris Becker in 1996, will next face Spain’s Pedro Martinez. While sharing the same half of the draw as Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, a potential clash with either wouldn’t occur until the semifinals.

The 27-year-old also joked about his father and brother, who serve as his coaches, stating he “didn’t really have a choice.”

Elsewhere in the men’s singles draw, Jiri Lehecka continued his strong start to the year, defeating Australian wildcard Li Tu in four sets (6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(1)). Lehecka, who recently won his second ATP title, will play Hugo Gaston next. Gaston himself secured his spot in the second round with a win over fellow Australian wildcard Omar Jasika, while Ugo Humbert defeated Matteo Gigante in straight sets.
