**LHASA, TIBET** – A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Dingri county in Tibet on January 7th, leaving at least 126 dead and thousands displaced. The quake, whose epicenter was located approximately 50 miles from Mount Everest and near the holy city of Shigatse, was felt as far away as Nepal and parts of India.

Initial assessments reveal over 3,600 buildings destroyed. Thousands of rescue workers are currently on the ground searching for survivors amidst the rubble, with Chinese state media reporting over 400 people already rescued. However, the rescue efforts are hampered by freezing temperatures and ongoing seismic activity, as hundreds of aftershocks, some exceeding a magnitude of 4.0, have followed the initial quake. Survivors and rescuers alike face perilous conditions.
