**Kanyakumari, India:** Director Bala’s latest film, “Vanangaan,” starring Arun Vijay and Ritika, attempts to shed light on the plight of marginalized communities and the abuse faced by vulnerable women. While the film’s intention to give voice to the voiceless is commendable, its execution falls short, hampered by an outdated script, excessive violence, and logical inconsistencies.
The story follows Kottai (Arun Vijay), a man who takes the law into his own hands to fight injustice. He secures a job as a security guard at a shelter for disabled women, where he confronts abuse. However, the film’s portrayal of the protagonist is problematic, showing him resorting to extreme violence, including brutally beating a woman who expresses her affection. Furthermore, the depiction of transgender individuals as criminals and the inclusion of graphic sexual violence scenes are criticized as disturbing and gratuitous.
While Arun Vijay delivers a committed performance, the film’s narrative structure is weak. The first half focuses heavily on action sequences showcasing Kottai’s aggression, while the second half dwells on melodramatic scenes. The emotional connection with the characters remains superficial, failing to explore the psychological impact of trauma on the victims. The film feels like a rehash of Bala’s previous works, ultimately failing to resonate with audiences in the age of OTT streaming. The director’s laudable intent is undermined by poor execution.
