Fri Jan 10 19:07:55 UTC 2025: **Trinamool Congress Suspends Two Prominent Members**
KOLKATA, January 11, 2025 – The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has suspended former Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen and former Bhangar MLA Arabul Islam for alleged anti-party activities. The decision, announced Friday, follows a recommendation from the party’s disciplinary committee and consultations with senior leaders, according to TMC vice-president Jay Prakash Majumdar.
Sen’s suspension stems from his criticism of the state government’s handling of the rape and murder case of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. He had voiced dissent against the official party line and reportedly accused the government of protecting former principal Sandip Ghosh. His wife, a TMC councillor, has also faced repercussions, being removed from several party WhatsApp groups.
Islam, meanwhile, has been out of favor for several years. A recent altercation on TMC Foundation Day (January 1, 2025) involving a scuffle with another party faction further sealed his fate.
These suspensions follow the establishment of three new disciplinary committees within the TMC in November 2024 and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s reiteration of her ultimate authority within the party. Political analysts note the unusual nature of these suspensions, considering the TMC’s history of internal factionalism.
