**Chennai, January 11, 2025** – The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced a ₹21.8 crore refurbishment project for the flooring in Chennai airport’s domestic terminals. The project, commencing in the coming months, will see the replacement of 50,000 sq.m. of existing flooring in Terminals T1 and T4 with marble, over a period of 15 months. The AAI official stated that the tender process is complete and the contract will be awarded shortly. The work will be carried out in phases to minimize disruption to passenger flow.

This upgrade comes as Chennai airport recently dropped to the sixth busiest in the country. The AAI is also undertaking a separate ₹2,467-crore modernisation project, including the construction of a new integrated terminal building for international operations, part of which is already operational.

While welcoming the flooring upgrade, regular passenger Ramkumar highlighted other areas needing attention, such as replacing worn-out chairs and improving the security check process in T1, suggesting dedicated shoe trays to ease congestion.
