Sat Jan 11 10:18:32 UTC 2025: ## Assam Reports First Human Metapneumovirus Case of the Season
**Dibrugarh, Assam –** Assam has reported its first case of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) infection of the season, health officials confirmed on Saturday. A 10-month-old infant admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh with cold-like symptoms tested positive for the virus. The child is currently stable and undergoing treatment.
The infection was confirmed through testing conducted by the ICMR-RMRC in Lahowal. While hMPV is a common respiratory virus causing mild cold symptoms, officials emphasize that this is the first case detected in the region this season and that the child is recovering well. According to Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty, senior scientist at ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre, NE, Lahowal, 110 hMPV cases have been detected in Dibrugarh district since 2014.
This news comes amidst reports of hMPV cases in other states, including Gujarat, where a third case has been confirmed in an eight-year-old boy, and Maharashtra, where two suspected cases are under investigation. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have also reported confirmed cases. While hMPV typically causes mild illness, it can be more severe in infants and individuals with weakened immune systems.
