**Bhopal, MP:** The selection process for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district presidents in Madhya Pradesh has descended into a chaotic stalemate, marked by internal divisions, allegations of favouritism, and public criticism. While senior leaders insist the process is underway, a consensus on candidates remains elusive, delaying appointments across the state, particularly in major cities like Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and Gwalior.
Sources within the party reveal that disagreements between senior BJP leaders have stalled the process, with some reportedly ignoring suggestions from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The situation has escalated to the point that senior leaders have travelled to Delhi to attempt to resolve the impasse. The BJP state office is described as being rife with tension, exacerbated by the proliferation of unofficial candidate lists and hoardings circulating on social media.
While BJP State General Secretary Bhagwan Das Sabnani assures the selection will adhere to guidelines, former minister Gopal Bhargava urged patience, promising a resolution within a day or two. Party insiders have indicated that the selection criteria prioritize candidates with less than four years of service (with those serving less than 1.5 years getting preference) and those facing no internal opposition. The party also aims to increase representation of women and Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes, with approximately 12-16 women expected among the 60 district presidents.
The Congress has seized on the situation, accusing the BJP of a lack of transparency and alleging that the selection is predetermined. Congress leader Bhupendra Gupta claimed that names have already been decided, suggesting a less-than-democratic process.
The ongoing delays raise concerns about the BJP’s organizational preparedness ahead of future elections in the state. The lack of resolution in key districts suggests the internal power struggles within the party may continue to hamper its functioning.
