**Thrissur, Kerala:** Renowned Malayalam playback singer P. Jayachandran passed away last night at 7:45 PM at a private hospital in Thrissur at the age of 80. He had been undergoing treatment for cancer for a considerable period. His death has left an irreplaceable void in the Malayalam film and music industry.
Jayachandran, known for his emotive and soulful voice, was a beloved figure across generations. His songs, spanning various genres including film songs, devotional hymns, and light music, touched the hearts of millions across India. His unique style of singing, characterized by unparalleled emotional expression, set him apart. He received numerous accolades for his contributions to the field of music, including five Kerala State Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and the J.C. Daniel Award in 2021. He also received the Kalaimamani Award from the Tamil Nadu government. His repertoire extended beyond Malayalam, encompassing Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
The funeral will take place tomorrow at 3 PM at the Paliyam Tharavadu crematorium in Chengamanagalam, Paravur. The body will be kept at the family home (Mannath House, Poonkunnath Chakkamukku, Thottekatt Line) from 9:30 AM today, followed by a public viewing at the Sangeetha Akademi Hall from 12 PM. A final public viewing will be held at Paliyam Tharavadu from 9 AM tomorrow.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan expressed their condolences. Jayachandran is survived by his wife Lalitha, daughter Lakshmi, and son Dinanathan, who is also a singer. He was born on March 3, 1944, in Ravipuram, Ernakulam district.
The loss of P. Jayachandran is deeply felt across the state and beyond. His legacy as a gifted singer, whose songs will continue to resonate for generations, remains a testament to his musical genius.
