**Thrissur, Kerala –** Acclaimed Malayalam playback singer P. Jayachandran, beloved by Keralites worldwide and affectionately known as “bhavagayakan,” passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 80. He was rushed back to Amala Hospital in Thrissur after collapsing at his home, despite having been discharged earlier in the day following treatment for age-related ailments. He breathed his last at 7:54 pm, according to hospital spokespeople.
Jayachandran, born in Kochi in 1944, began his career after being discovered while working at a Chennai company. His breakthrough came with the song “Manjalayil Mungi Thorthi” in the 1966 film *Kalithozhan*, composed by the legendary G. Devarajan. His illustrious career spanned decades, with numerous hit songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi.
Among his most memorable works are “Neelagiriyude Sakhikale” (which won him his first Kerala State Film Award), “Raagam Sreeraagam,” and “Karimukil Kaattile.” He also received the National Award for Best Singer for the song “Sivasankara Sarva Saranya Vibho” from the film *Sree Narayana Guru* (1985) and a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for his performance in “Kathazham Kattuvazhi” with A.R. Rahman. He collaborated with renowned music directors including M.S. Viswanathan and Ilaiyaraaja.
A self-taught singer, Jayachandran captivated audiences for generations with his soulful voice and unique style. He is survived by his wife Latha and children Lakshmi and Dinanath. His passing marks the end of an era in Malayalam cinema.
