Fri Jan 10 05:40:00 UTC 2025: ## HMPV Surge in China Sparks Pandemic Fears, but Experts Dismiss Concerns

**Beijing/London** – A recent surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China has fueled anxieties of another COVID-19-like pandemic, with images of crowded hospitals circulating on social media. However, health experts worldwide are reassuring the public that the situation is not as alarming as it seems.

HMPV, a common virus causing flu-like symptoms, has been circulating globally for over two decades. The current increase in cases, particularly in China and other Northern Hemisphere countries, is attributed to the typical seasonal rise seen during winter months. The virus thrives in colder temperatures and closed indoor spaces, facilitating transmission. While China is experiencing a significant spike coinciding with low temperatures expected to last until March, experts emphasize this is a seasonal pattern, not a novel outbreak.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the situation and reports no unusual outbreak patterns globally. Chinese authorities have confirmed their healthcare system is not overwhelmed, and no emergency declarations have been issued. Similarly, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reports a rise in HMPV cases consistent with typical seasonal trends.

While HMPV can cause severe illness in vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals, experts stress that it is not a new virus and existing immunity exists within the population. Most people experience mild symptoms, similar to the flu.

Professor Paul Hunter of the University of East Anglia notes that almost every child experiences at least one HMPV infection by age five, and multiple reinfections are common throughout life. This widespread prior exposure contributes to a degree of population immunity.

Dr. Hsu Li Yang, an infectious disease specialist, highlights that while a small percentage of immunocompromised individuals may develop severe lung issues requiring hospitalization, the risk of death remains relatively low.

Experts emphasize that a pandemic typically arises from a novel virus, unlike HMPV. The current increase is a seasonal fluctuation, and the fear of a COVID-style pandemic is considered overblown. Health officials advise standard precautions to prevent infection, such as good hygiene and vaccination against other respiratory illnesses like the flu.
