**New Delhi, India** – India has reported six confirmed cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a common respiratory virus, prompting a monitoring response from the Union health ministry. While the virus, which typically causes mild cold-like symptoms, has been circulating globally since at least the 1970s (and was first identified in 2001), the recent reports have led to increased vigilance.
Health Minister JP Nadda reassured the public that the existing healthcare system is prepared to manage any potential increase in cases. He emphasized that HMPV is not a new virus and urged citizens not to panic. The ministry is actively monitoring the situation.
Reports of HMPV infections have emerged from various states, including an 80-year-old man in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, who is currently receiving treatment. However, officials stress that the patient had no recent travel history abroad. In contrast to the situation in India, China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that while influenza cases are declining, acute respiratory infections, including HMPV, remain high.
While some states, like Punjab, report no HMPV cases, others, including Chhattisgarh, are forming technical committees to monitor the situation and raise public awareness. Experts, including officials from the World Health Organization (WHO), have stressed that the increase in respiratory infections during winter and spring is typical. They further emphasized that while HMPV can cause severe symptoms in infants and those with weakened immune systems, it is generally less severe and transmissible than COVID-19. Doctors across the country have reiterated that HMPV is not a cause for widespread alarm. However, the government’s proactive monitoring continues to ensure the timely and effective management of any potential surge in cases.
