Fri Jan 10 02:51:51 UTC 2025: ## Greenland Urges Unity Amidst Trump’s Controversial Remarks on Territorial Control
**Copenhagen/Nuuk** – Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede has issued a plea for national unity following U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial suggestion that the United States might seek to acquire Greenland. Egede, a pro-independence leader, acknowledged public concern stemming from Trump’s refusal to rule out using military or economic force to obtain the territory. However, he stressed the importance of setting aside internal differences and standing together as a nation.
The Greenlandic government released a statement reiterating its right to self-determination and expressing its intention to engage with the incoming Biden administration. While acknowledging Greenland’s strategic importance to U.S. national security interests – highlighted by the presence of a U.S. military base – the statement emphasized Greenland’s desire for continued cooperation with the U.S. and NATO allies to ensure Arctic stability. The statement also indicated Greenland’s openness to increased cooperation with the US in areas such as business, mineral development, and critical minerals.
Trump’s remarks, made during a press conference, also included similar statements regarding Panama and Canada, sparking international controversy. The U.S. embassy in Copenhagen subsequently clarified that there are no plans to expand the U.S. military presence in Greenland.
Denmark, which manages Greenland’s foreign and security policy, has responded to the situation. Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen admitted to years of underinvestment in monitoring capabilities within the Kingdom, while Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has engaged in diplomatic efforts, including speaking with European leaders and requesting a meeting with Trump (though she doesn’t expect one before his term ends). She emphasized Denmark’s commitment to safeguarding its and Greenland’s interests, highlighting the U.S. as Denmark’s closest ally. The Kremlin has also expressed its close monitoring of the situation, emphasizing a desire for peace and stability in the region.
Egede, who advocates for Greenlandic independence, used his New Year’s speech to call for the island’s liberation from “colonial shackles,” and has reiterated the need for significant steps toward independence after upcoming elections, contingent on a future referendum as stipulated in a 2009 agreement with Denmark. Despite the current geopolitical tensions, Egede has stressed the need for unity within Greenland, urging citizens not to panic and to focus on the country’s future. Greenlandic elections are expected by April 6th.
