**New Delhi, January 10, 2025** – The Indian government has announced a conservative wheat procurement target of 30 million tonnes for the 2025-26 rabi marketing season, despite aiming for record wheat production. This decision follows discussions with state food secretaries and comes even as the Agriculture Ministry projects a record 115 million tonnes of wheat production in the current 2024-25 crop year.
The minimum support price for wheat has been set at ₹2,425 per quintal for the upcoming season, which begins in April. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies will conduct the procurement to ensure farmers receive the minimum support price and to meet the demands of government welfare schemes.
Last year’s procurement (2024-25) reached 26.6 million tonnes, falling short of the 30-32 million tonne target but exceeding the previous year’s 26.2 million tonnes. Procurement figures have fluctuated in recent years, reaching a low of 18.8 million tonnes in 2022-23 against a target of 44.4 million tonnes. Wheat sowing for the upcoming season is nearing completion, covering 31.9 million hectares with favorable crop conditions reported across many states.
