**Kolkata, January 10, 2025** – Amidst heightened tensions following recent political upheaval in Bangladesh, senior officials from the Border Security Force (BSF) of India and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) held a meeting on January 9th at the Petrapole border in West Bengal. The meeting aimed to address concerns regarding border security and cooperation.
The discussions focused on collaborative efforts to combat cross-border crime, manage ongoing development projects near the border, prevent illegal crossings, and improve overall border management. The meeting, described as routine and informal by the BSF, follows recent disputes, including a disagreement over fence construction near Sukdebpur in Malda.
Inspector-General of the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier, Maninder P.S. Pawar, and Brigadier-General Mohammad Humayun Kabir, Regional Commander of the BGB’s South West Region, led their respective delegations. Both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and fostering cooperation between India and Bangladesh.
The South Bengal Frontier of the BSF oversees a significant portion (913 km) of the 2,216 km India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal. The challenging terrain, including extensive riverine areas and incomplete fencing, presents ongoing management difficulties. The total India-Bangladesh border spans 4,096 km. The meeting comes as a significant step in addressing recent border tensions and promoting stability in the region.
