Thu Jan 09 18:32:39 UTC 2025: **BJP Accuses Congress of Misleading Public on GST Success**
NEW DELHI, January 10, 2025 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today accused the Congress party of spreading misinformation regarding the Goods and Services Tax (GST). BJP spokesperson Syed Zafar Islam stated that the Congress is attempting to discredit the GST’s success due to its own inability to exploit loopholes for corruption, as existed under previous systems.
Islam highlighted record-breaking GST collections – ₹21.51 lakh crore in 2024 and ₹16.33 lakh crore already collected in 2024-25 – as evidence of the GST’s effectiveness. He also pointed to increased central grants to states and the simplified, transparent GST compliance process benefiting both the government and consumers.
Dismissing Congress’s criticisms, including past references to the GST as “Gabbar Singh Tax” and more recently “Tax Terrorism,” Islam emphasized that the GST Council’s decisions, involving representatives from opposition-ruled states, including Congress-led ones, are made by consensus. He stated that 55 meetings have been held without a single decision made without unanimous agreement. The BJP maintains that the Congress is resorting to falsehoods due to a lack of a substantive political agenda.
