Thu Jan 09 01:18:13 UTC 2025: ## Georgia High School Again on Edge After Student Arrested with Gun

**WINDER, Ga., Jan. 9, 2025** – Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, is grappling with another security incident following the arrest of a 14-year-old student for possessing a firearm on school grounds. The arrest, made Wednesday afternoon without incident, comes less than four months after a mass shooting at the same school claimed the lives of two teachers and two students.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office reported that the student was cooperative and hadn’t threatened anyone. He faces charges including possessing a weapon on school grounds, theft, and being a minor in possession of a gun. He is currently being held at a juvenile detention center.

The school district canceled classes Thursday, citing the ongoing emotional distress following the September tragedy and the latest incident. The closure affects nearly 2,000 students. Extracurricular activities and an open house for new portable classrooms, replacing those damaged in the September shooting, were also canceled.

The Wednesday arrest follows a Tuesday school board meeting where parents, teachers, and students urged the district to enhance security measures. Suggestions included increasing the number of school resource officers, mandating clear backpacks, and implementing a gun-detecting AI camera system. Superintendent Dallas LeDuff stated the district is reviewing security measures and will present the results of a security survey later this month.

The September 4th shooting resulted in the deaths of teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie, and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. A 14-year-old, Colt Gray, has been charged as an adult in connection with that shooting, pleading not guilty to numerous charges, including murder and aggravated assault. His father, Colin Gray, also faces charges related to the accessibility of firearms to his son. The ongoing legal proceedings and the recent arrest have left the school community on edge.
