**CHENNAI, INDIA** – P. Jayachandran, a celebrated playback singer who graced the Tamil and Malayalam film industries for over five decades, passed away. Born in Ernakulam, Kerala, to renowned musician Thrippunithura Ravi Varma Kochchaniyil Thamburan and Subhadra Kunjammal, Jayachandran began his musical journey at a young age, learning mridangam at six and singing devotional songs in churches at eight.

He started his career in Malayalam films in the late 1960s and went on to achieve notable success, winning a Kerala State Award for his song “Neelagiriyude” in the 1972 film *Panitheeratha Veedu*. His collaborations with legendary composers like M.S. Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, and A.R. Rahman cemented his position in the industry. Jayachandran’s distinctive voice lent itself beautifully to a wide range of emotions and musical styles.

His contribution to Tamil cinema is equally significant. He sang memorable songs in numerous films, including notable collaborations with lyricists like Kannadasan and Vairamuthu. Some of his most cherished Tamil songs include “Ponnenna Poovenna” (*Alaigal*, 1973), “Kaaththிருந்து Kaaththிருந்து” (*Vaidehi Kaaththirundhaal*, 1984), for which he received a National Award, and “Oru Theivam Thandha Poove” (*Kannathil Muthamittal*, 2002).
