**Mumbai, India –** Renowned Indian journalist, poet, filmmaker, and former Rajya Sabha member Pritish Nandy passed away on Wednesday at his Mumbai home after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 73.
Nandy’s contributions spanned several fields. He was a highly influential figure in Indian journalism, particularly known for his time as editor of *The Illustrated Weekly of India*, where his bold approach and daring subjects revitalized the publication in the 1980s. Tributes poured in from colleagues and friends, praising his unique style and fearless reporting. Sheela Bhatt, a fellow journalist, described him as a “game changer” who injected much-needed energy into the then-staid magazine journalism landscape.
Beyond journalism, Nandy was a prolific poet, authoring around 40 books of poetry in English and translating works from other Indian languages. He also made his mark in the film industry, founding Pritish Nandy Communications, a production company responsible for iconic films such as *Sur*, *Kaante*, *Jhankaar Beats*, *Chameli*, *Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi*, and *Pyaar Ke Side Effects*.
Actor Anupam Kher shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, remembering Nandy as a close friend and mentor who provided invaluable support during his early days in Mumbai. Kher lauded Nandy’s strength, fearlessness, and significant influence on his career.
Nandy was also a known animal rights advocate and served as a Rajya Sabha member for the Shiv Sena. His last rites were performed on Wednesday evening. He is survived by his daughters.
