Wed Jan 08 19:12:15 UTC 2025: ## Prayagraj Gears Up for Maha Kumbh Mela 2025: A Spectacle of Faith and Logistics

**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, January 9, 2025** – The world’s largest religious gathering, the Maha Kumbh Mela, is set to commence in Prayagraj on January 13th, 2025, and run until February 26th. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated 167 projects worth ₹5500 crore in preparation, including a multilingual chatbot and renovations to holy sites. The event will feature spectacular drone shows depicting Hindu mythology.

The Kumbh Mela, tracing its origins to the 8th century, is held every three years at different locations along major rivers, culminating in the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj every 12 years. The dates are determined by astrological calculations. Devotees believe bathing in the sacred rivers at these sites brings salvation.

A key feature is the Shahi Snan, a holy dip performed by various monastic orders (akharas), led by Naga Sadhus. The inclusion of the Kinnar Akhara, a group of transgender saints, in 2019 highlights the evolving inclusivity of the event.

The Kumbh Mela’s history is interwoven with British colonial rule, which significantly influenced its organization and logistics. The British introduced infrastructure improvements and managed the event to prevent clashes between akharas, though the event also became a platform for the Indian independence movement.

Post-independence, the Indian government has faced immense logistical challenges managing the ever-growing crowds. Past Melas have seen both remarkable feats of organization and tragic incidents like stampedes, highlighting the complexities of managing such a massive gathering. The 1977 Mela, held under Emergency rule, saw unprecedented attendance and government control over media and messaging. The 1989 Mela saw the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) unveil plans for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

This year’s Maha Kumbh is expected to draw an estimated 45 crore people. The Uttar Pradesh government has declared a new Mahakumbh Mela District, implemented the Essential Services Maintenance Act to prevent strikes, and deployed a 50,000-strong police force, AI-enabled surveillance, and RFID tracking technology. The Indian Railways will operate numerous special trains. The government has undertaken extensive infrastructure development, including new ghats, sanitation facilities, and medical infrastructure.

Despite the massive preparations, the history of the Kumbh Mela serves as a reminder of the potential for both immense spiritual significance and significant logistical challenges, emphasizing the need for meticulous planning and effective crowd management.
