**TIRUPATI, Andhra Pradesh** – At least six pilgrims died and numerous others were injured in a stampede at the Tirumala Srivari Vaikuntha Dwara ticketing counter in Tirupati yesterday evening. The incident occurred near Vishnu Nivasam during the distribution of darshan tokens for the Vaikunta Dwara Darshan.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as police opened the gates for token distribution, triggering a massive rush. One woman, who was with 20 family members and sustained injuries to six of them, reported that a large number of men surged forward, causing injuries to many women. She stated that there was no prior system for token distribution, exacerbating the situation.
Another man recounted the tragic loss of his wife, who was attempting to obtain a ticket when the stampede occurred.
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) officials confirmed the death toll and the injuries sustained. While one victim has been identified, the identities of the others remain unknown.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is closely monitoring the situation and expressed his dissatisfaction with the officials’ handling of the event during a teleconference. He is scheduled to meet with the families of the victims today and warned that such incidents must not be repeated. The Chief Minister will visit the families of the deceased tomorrow at 11:45 am. A full investigation into the incident is expected.
