Thu Jan 09 08:54:19 UTC 2025: ## Blinken Dismisses Trump’s Greenland Grab as Unlikely, Emphasizes Allied Cooperation

**Paris, France** – Outgoing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has dismissed President-elect Donald Trump’s repeated threats to seize Greenland as unrealistic, urging the world not to dwell on the issue. Speaking at a farewell press conference in Paris, Blinken emphasized the importance of strong US alliances, stating that the Biden administration believes closer collaboration with allies, rather than alienation, leads to better outcomes.

Trump, in recent pronouncements, has reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland, even suggesting the use of force if necessary. These statements have been met with strong rebuffs from both Denmark and Greenland. Blinken’s comments directly contradict Trump’s plans, asserting that such an acquisition is simply not going to happen.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, while echoing the assessment that a US invasion is improbable, expressed concern over a potential resurgence of power politics globally, warning Europe to prepare for turbulence. He noted that while a US takeover of Greenland is unlikely, the possibility of stronger nations employing “the law of the strongest” is a significant worry.

Despite Blinken’s dismissal, Trump’s incoming National Security Advisor, Congressman Mike Waltz, highlighted Greenland’s strategic importance due to its natural resources, critical minerals, and its position in the increasingly contested Arctic region, citing competition from Russia and China.

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has reaffirmed the island’s non-negotiable status and reiterated his push for independence. Denmark’s foreign minister acknowledged the possibility of Greenland becoming independent but dismissed its annexation by the US. Greenland’s strategic location for the US military and its ballistic missile early-warning system remains a point of significance, even amidst the current political climate.
