Thu Jan 09 09:19:06 UTC 2025: ## Devastating Wildfires Ravage Los Angeles, Claiming Lives and Homes of Celebrities

**Los Angeles, CA** – Widespread wildfires fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds have devastated parts of Los Angeles, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming at least five lives. The fires, which began Tuesday and continue to rage, have forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate and destroyed over 1,000 structures, including homes belonging to several celebrities.

Among the high-profile victims are singer Mandy Moore, who lost her Altadena home, and Paris Hilton, whose Malibu residence was consumed by flames. Actor Billy Crystal also confirmed the loss of his long-time Pacific Palisades home. Other celebrities, including Spencer Pratt, Heidi Montag, James Woods, Diane Warren, Cameron Mathison, and Ricki Lake, have also reportedly suffered losses. Priyanka Chopra shared a video of the fire from her home on social media.

The fires have prompted mandatory evacuations in multiple areas, including Pacific Palisades, Altadena (where the Eaton Fire is burning and has caused 100,000 evacuations), and the Hollywood Hills. Mayor Karen Bass deployed LAPD officers to assist with evacuation traffic and road closures. President Biden canceled a planned trip to Italy to oversee the federal response, approving a major disaster declaration for California at the request of Governor Newsom. Vice President Kamala Harris also released a statement expressing support for the ongoing efforts.

The Eaton Fire near Pasadena is on track to become California’s largest January wildfire in over 40 years, having already consumed more than 16.5 square miles. One fire in the city is considered the most destructive in Los Angeles’ modern history. The devastation includes the loss of landmarks like the historic Will Rogers ranch house and the Topanga Ranch Motel. Palisades Charter High School, a frequent filming location, was also damaged.

The wildfires have significantly impacted the entertainment industry, with postponements and cancellations of events including the Oscar nominations announcement (delayed until January 19th), the Critics Choice Awards, and several film premieres. Production on various television shows has also been halted.

Firefighters from multiple states have been mobilized to assist local crews, but strong winds initially hampered water-dropping aircraft. While winds have eased somewhat, the danger remains, with stronger winds forecast to return. The situation is further complicated by reports of fire hydrants running dry due to extremely high water demand. Los Angeles County officials are urging residents to conserve water. The extreme dryness, exacerbated by climate change, has been cited as a major contributing factor to the fires’ rapid spread and intensity.
