Wed Jan 08 23:43:02 UTC 2025: ## Israel Tightens Media Restrictions on Soldiers Following War Crimes Allegations

**JERUSALEM** – The Israeli military has imposed new restrictions on media coverage of soldiers following a series of incidents where reservists abroad faced legal action over alleged war crimes committed in Gaza. The move comes after an Israeli reservist vacationing in Brazil fled the country following a Brazilian judge’s order to investigate war crimes allegations brought by a pro-Palestinian group.

Under the new rules, soldiers of the rank of colonel and below will have their faces and full names obscured in media interviews, mirroring existing regulations for pilots and special forces. Interviewees cannot be linked to specific combat events.

Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, an Israeli military spokesperson, stated the guidelines aim to protect soldiers from “anti-Israel activists” who are allegedly connecting soldiers’ online posts from Gaza with their subsequent travel locations. He cited instances where activist groups, such as the Hind Rajab Foundation, have prompted investigations abroad, though these investigations did not lead to charges.

While existing rules prohibit soldiers from posting combat zone imagery on social media, Shoshani acknowledged imperfect enforcement. The new restrictions follow last year’s International Criminal Court arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and a Hamas leader, highlighting the heightened sensitivity surrounding alleged war crimes in Gaza. The military spokesperson confirmed several cases, in addition to the Brazil incident, where reservists faced targeting abroad due to online activity.
