**CHENNAI, January 4, 2025** – A groundbreaking study published in *The Hindu* today reveals that the protein Hmga1 plays a crucial role in the remarkable heart regeneration capabilities of zebrafish. Unlike humans and mice, zebrafish can fully repair heart damage within 60 days. Researchers discovered that Hmga1 removes molecular blocks on DNA, allowing dormant genes responsible for cell growth to become active and facilitating heart muscle regeneration.

While the Hmga1 gene is present in humans and mice, it becomes inactive after embryonic development. However, in zebrafish, it remains active during heart repair. Encouragingly, experiments on mice showed that localized application of the Hmga1 protein stimulated heart muscle cell growth in damaged areas, significantly improving heart function without adverse side effects.
