Las Vegas, NV – The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 was dominated by the automotive industry, showcasing a wave of innovation in electric vehicles (EVs), autonomous driving, and even flying cars. While Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced significant advancements in AI-powered self-driving technology, the sheer breadth of automotive innovations overshadowed other tech breakthroughs.

Honda unveiled two new EV prototypes, the Honda 0 SUV and Honda 0 Saloon, slated for a North American launch in 2026. These vehicles boast a futuristic design and will feature Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities thanks to Renesas Electronics chips and Honda’s ASIMO operating system. Honda also revealed an updated version of its Afeela electric sedan, a joint venture with Sony, which will be sold directly to consumers online for $90,000 and feature a full Sony-powered infotainment system including PS5 gaming capabilities. However, Honda expressed concerns about US EV production due to potential changes to EV tax credits under the incoming administration.

Nvidia announced its Cosmos platform for self-driving software development, highlighting its already $5 billion annual revenue from autonomous driving technology. The company also revealed new partnerships with Toyota for next-generation EV technology and with Aurora Innovation and Continental for autonomous trucking, leveraging Nvidia’s new DRIVE Thor chip.

BMW showcased its updated iDrive infotainment system, featuring a panoramic display and enhanced driver interface. Hyundai, through its Mobis division, unveiled a holographic windshield display, projecting driving information onto the windshield, with Kia’s EV9 set to be the first vehicle to feature the technology.

In a surprising turn, Chinese EV maker XPeng debuted its AeroHT, a six-wheeled modular EV van with a deployable electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. While still a concept, XPeng anticipates bringing the “Land Aircraft Carrier” flying car to market soon.

The show highlighted the blurring lines between consumer electronics and the automotive industry, with cars increasingly becoming sophisticated technological platforms.
