**TIRUPATI, Andhra Pradesh** – At least six devotees died and several others were injured in a stampede Wednesday evening near the Tirupati Vishnu Niwasam ticket counter. The incident occurred as hundreds of pilgrims jostled for tickets to the annual Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple on Tirumala Hills. The 10-day religious event begins January 10th.

According to Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) officials, the stampede resulted from the overwhelming number of devotees who had gathered from across India to secure tickets. Videos circulating online show police performing CPR and ambulances transporting the injured.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow, stating the incident was deeply disturbing and ordered higher officials to provide immediate relief and medical care to the injured. He is reportedly monitoring the situation closely and liaising with district and TTD officials.

TTD board member Bhanu Prakash acknowledged shortcomings in the arrangements and promised stringent action, although he lamented the inability to reverse the tragic loss of life.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed their condolences and assured that the state government is providing all possible assistance to the victims and their families. Both leaders offered prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. The incident is under investigation.
