**Washington, D.C. –** The body of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter arrived in Washington D.C. on January 7th, beginning a period of public mourning. Air Force One, carrying Carter’s casket, departed from Atlanta, Georgia in the morning and landed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

Following a transfer to a hearse, the casket was transported to the U.S. Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue, a tribute to Carter’s naval service. A horse-drawn caisson then carried the casket to the Capitol building, where it was placed in the Capitol Rotunda for a public viewing that began later that day. The event marks the beginning of a series of tributes honoring the life and legacy of the 39th President of the United States.
