Wed Jan 08 07:08:43 UTC 2025: ## Bad Spelling Cracks Kidnapping Hoax in India

**Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India –** A misspelt ransom note led to the unraveling of a staged kidnapping in Hardoi district, Uttar Pradesh, police announced Wednesday. Sanjay Kumar, a contractor, reported receiving a ransom demand of ₹50,000 for the release of his allegedly kidnapped brother, Sandeep (27). The ransom note, however, contained a crucial error: it misspelled “death” as “deth.”

Superintendent of Police Neeraj Kumar Jadaun stated that this spelling mistake, along with the relatively small ransom amount and the lack of known enemies, raised suspicion. Police traced Sandeep to Rupapur and, during interrogation, asked him to replicate the ransom note. He again misspelled “death,” confirming their suspicions.

Sandeep confessed to staging his own kidnapping, inspired by the popular Indian crime serial “CID.” He had recently been involved in an accident where he injured an elderly person, incurring compensation demands he couldn’t meet. He needed the money to cover these costs. Sandeep has been arrested.
