Wed Jan 08 10:52:50 UTC 2025: ## Devastating 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Leaving Hundreds Dead and Thousands Homeless

**LHASA, TIBET** – A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the foothills of the Himalayas on Tuesday, leaving at least 126 people dead and 188 injured in the Shigatse region of Tibet, China. Over 3,600 homes have been destroyed, and thousands more are damaged, leaving residents facing freezing temperatures and the ongoing threat of aftershocks.

The quake, which struck approximately 80 kilometers north of Mount Everest, also caused tremors felt in neighboring Nepal, Bhutan, and India. No deaths have been reported outside of Tibet. The epicenter was located in Tingri county, a less developed area with primarily earthen homes, many of which collapsed during the quake.

Rescue efforts are underway, hampered by over 500 aftershocks, extreme cold (temperatures plummeting to -18°C), and the challenging terrain. Over 400 people have been rescued so far, but an unknown number remain missing. The Chinese government has mobilized a large-scale response, deploying 3,400 rescuers, hundreds of medical workers, and military personnel to the affected areas. Supplies including tents, food, and blankets are being distributed to those left homeless. Road damage has been repaired, ensuring access for aid deliveries.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an “all-out” search and rescue effort, prioritizing the safety and well-being of survivors. The government has raised its national emergency response level to the highest tier.

While the initial focus remains on rescue and relief efforts, the scale of the destruction poses a significant long-term challenge for the region. The rebuilding process will require substantial resources and time, particularly given the remote location and existing infrastructure limitations.
